Julio Cobos (2008)

Julio César Cleto Cobos (born April 30, 1955 in Godoy Cruz , Mendoza province ) is an Argentine politician ( UCR , later FPV ). Between 2007 and 2011 he was Vice President of the Cristina Fernández de Kirchner government .

Life

Cobos studied engineering at the Universidad Tecnológica Nacional and after graduating in 1979 worked as a lecturer at the UTN, the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo (UNCu) and the Universidad de Mendoza . In 1997 he was elected dean of the UTN regional faculty in Mendoza .

Political career

In 1991, Cobos joined the UCR. In 1994 he started as a functionary in the secretariat for urban planning of the mayor's office in Mendoza. In 1999 he became Minister for Environment and Public Works in the provincial government under Roberto Iglesias. In 2003 he was elected governor of the province.

Cobos had a good relationship with the Kirchner government based on mutual dialogue , so that in 2007 he was nominated for the vice-presidential candidate in the formula of Cristina Fernández de Kirchner in order to win UCR voters for the Frente para la Victoria . He was then expelled from the UCR. Fernández and Cobos won the election clearly with 45.29% of the valid votes, so that he took office on December 10, 2007.

On July 18, 2008, Cobos caused a sensation when, in the midst of a government crisis due to a conflict between Fernández and the agricultural associations in his function as Senate President , he voted against a government-initiated increase in export taxes for some agricultural products (especially soybeans ) and thus the project Fall brought, which significantly defused the conflict, but worsened the relationship with Fernández. After this action he was one of the most popular politicians in Argentina in the second half of 2008.

In September 2008, Cobos initiated negotiations with politicians from various parties in order to set up an election platform called "Consenso Federal" for the 2009 elections.
