William M. Brown

William M. Brown (born September 20, 1850 in Greenville , Mercer County , Pennsylvania , †  January 31, 1915 in New York City , New York ) was an American politician . Between 1903 and 1907 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Pennsylvania.

Career

After the early death of his father, William Brown moved with his mother to Iowa as a child , where he grew up until he was 19. Then he settled in Greencastle, Pennsylvania. He continued his education he started in Iowa and worked as an accountant for several companies. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1876, he began to work in this profession. By 1883 he was employed by the Iowa Land Registry for a year before returning to Greencastle. In addition to his work as a lawyer, he was active there in various other industries. He founded the trading company Brown, Thompson & Company and was involved in founding the New Castle Paper Company and the New Castle Electric Street Railway in New Castle . Through his business engagements he made considerable fortune.

Politically, Brown was a member of the Republican Party . He served on the New Castle ward council for nearly ten years. Between 1897 and 1899 he was a member of the Pennsylvania Senate . In 1902 he was elected lieutenant governor of his state at the side of Samuel Pennypacker . He held this office between 1903 and 1907. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. After that, Brown was a director at the Lawrence Savings & Trust Company . He also took part in other companies. This also included the railway industry.

In the 1914 election, William Brown was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC . There he should have taken up his new mandate on March 4, 1915 as the successor to Henry Wilson Temple . But he died unexpectedly during a visit to New York City on January 31 of that year. Brown was married to Margaret Foltz, the daughter of an influential bank president in New Castle.
