Thomas Kennedy (born November 2, 1887 in Lansford , Carbon County , Pennsylvania , †  January 19, 1963 in Hazleton , Pennsylvania) was an American trade unionist and politician . Between 1935 and 1939 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Pennsylvania.

Career

Thomas Kennedy came from a mining family. His father was killed in a mine accident in 1903. He became a member of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA). He remained associated with this union throughout his life. From 1903 he held various functions within this organization, first at the local and later at the federal level. He retained his union offices during his time as lieutenant governor. From 1925 to 1947 he was treasurer, then vice president until 1960 and then president of this union until his death as successor to John L. Lewis .

Politically, Kennedy was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1936, 1940, 1956 and 1960 he took part as a delegate to the respective Democratic National Conventions . In 1934 he was elected Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania at the side of George Howard Earle . He held this office between 1935 and 1939. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . During the Second World War he was part of the National War Labor Board . Thomas Kennedy died on January 19, 1963 after a long illness, which forced him to delegate some tasks as President of UMWA to his deputy WA Boyle , who then also became his successor.
