history
Missionaries of the Moravian Church ( Moravian Church ) came to the area from Bethlehem and founded a settlement around 1780, which was called Hazel Swamp because of its numerous hazelnut trees . Due to the rich occurrence of anthracite coal in the region, the place developed into a rapidly growing city. At first immigrants came mainly from Germany and Ireland , a little later also from Italy , Poland and Slovakia , as the demand for fuel increased sharply across the country and miners were urgently sought. The city was also known as the Power City .
In 1857 the place became a borough and should actually be called "Hazelton". Due to a typographical error, however, “Hazleton” was chartered and it was left with that name. In 1891 Hazleton received City status . Hazleton reached its heyday in the 1940s with a population of around 40,000.
After the end of the Second World War , anthracite extraction fell sharply, as other types of energy were increasingly used, which is why the population also shrank. However, many illegal immigrants, mainly from Latin America , settled in for new industries . After a regulation was passed restricting illegal immigrants, their numbers fell again.
