John Merriman Reynolds
John Merriman Reynolds (born March 5, 1848 in Quarryville , Lancaster County , Pennsylvania , † September 14, 1933 in Bedford , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . From 1911 to 1915 he was Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania; he also represented this state between 1905 and 1911 in the US House of Representatives .
Career
John Reynolds attended public schools in his home country. In 1867 he graduated from the Pennsylvania State Normal School . Later he also studied at Columbian University , today's George Washington University in Washington, DC Between 1867 and 1869 he worked in Bedford in the school service as a principal . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1870, he began to work in this profession in Bedford. There he published the Bedford Gazette between 1872 and 1880 . Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party . He was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1873 and 1874 . From 1875 to 1879 he served as the district attorney in Bedford County .
Between 1884 and 1900, Reynolds was also a member of the Bedford City Education Committee. In 1888 and 1892 he took part as a delegate at the Democratic National Conventions , at which Grover Cleveland was nominated as a presidential candidate. From 1893 he was also active in the banking industry. From 1893 to 1897 he served as Assistant Secretary of the Interior Deputy Secretary of the Interior . In 1896, Reynolds broke with the Democrats because he turned down their presidential candidate, William Jennings Bryan . He switched to the Republican Party and supported their then victorious candidate William McKinley .
In the congressional election of 1904 , Reynolds was elected as a Republican in the 19th constituency of Pennsylvania to the US House of Representatives in Washington, where he succeeded Alvin Evans on March 4, 1905 . After two re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his resignation on January 17, 1911 . His resignation came after he was elected lieutenant governor of his state. He held this office from January 17, 1911 to January 19, 1915 as deputy to Governor John Tener . After that he practiced as a lawyer again. He also continued to work in the banking industry. Between 1917 and 1915 Reynolds served on a commission to revise the banking laws of the State of Pennsylvania. John Reynolds died on September 14, 1933 in Bedford, where he was also buried.
