Charles Warren Stone (1896)

Charles Warren Stone (born June 29, 1843 in Groton , Middlesex County , Massachusetts , †  August 15, 1912 in Warren , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . Between 1890 and 1899 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives . He was also lieutenant governor of this state from 1879 to 1883 .

Career

Charles Stone attended Lawrence Academy in Groton and then until 1863 Williams College in Williamstown . In the same year he moved to Warren, Pennsylvania, where he worked in the school ministry. In 1865 he became a school councilor in Warren County . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1867, he began to work in Warren in this profession. He also became a curator of Pennsylvania State College . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1870 and 1871 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania ; from 1877 to 1878 he was a member of the State Senate . Between 1879 and 1873 he was Lieutenant Governor of his state representative of Governor Henry Hoyt . From 1887 to 1890 he was Secretary of the Commonwealth, the executive officer of the state government of Pennsylvania.

After the death of Member of Parliament Lewis Findlay Watson , Stone was elected to the House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the by-election due for the 27th seat of Pennsylvania , where he took up his new mandate on November 4, 1890. After four re-elections, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1899 . During this time the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell . From 1895 Stone was chairman of the Committee on Coinage, Weights, and Measures . In 1898 he was not re-elected.

Also in 1898 Charles Stone ran unsuccessfully for governor of Pennsylvania. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he practiced as a lawyer again. He died on August 15, 1912 on his estate near Warren. He was also buried in this city.
