Jesse Miller
Jesse Miller (* 1800 near Landisburg , Perry County , Pennsylvania , † August 20, 1850 in Harrisburg , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1833 and 1836 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Jesse Miller attended public schools in his home country. Between 1820 and 1823 he was a County Commissioner District Councilor in Perry County; from 1823 to 1826 he was sheriff there . In the 1820s he joined the movement around the future US President Andrew Jackson and became a member of the Democratic Party founded by this in 1828 . Between 1826 and 1828 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania ; from 1828 to 1832 he was a member of the State Senate .
In the congressional elections of 1832 Miller was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 13th constituency of Pennsylvania , where he took up his new mandate on March 4, 1833. After being re-elected, he could remain in Congress until his resignation on October 30, 1836 . There he was chairman of the Committee on Invalid Pensions . Since President Jackson took office in 1829, there has been heated debate inside and outside of Congress about its policies. It was about the controversial enforcement of the Indian Removal Act , the conflict with the state of South Carolina , which culminated in the nullification crisis , and the banking policy of the president.
Jesse Miller's resignation took place after his appointment as auditor ( auditor ) of the Treasury by President Jackson. He held this office between 1836 and 1842. In 1844 and 1845 he was the sewer commissioner of his state; from 1845 to 1848 he was Secretary of the Commonwealth, the executive officer of the government of Pennsylvania. He died on August 20, 1850 in Harrisburg, where he was also buried. His son William (1829-1870) was also a member of Congress.
