Charles McClure

Charles McClure (* 1804 in Carlisle , Pennsylvania , †  January 10, 1846 in Allegheny , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1837 and 1841 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives twice .

Career

Born on the Willow Grove farm in Cumberland County , Charles McClure attended Dickinson College in Carlisle until 1824 . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1826, he began to work in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1835 he was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives .

In the congressional elections of 1836 McClure was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 13th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded James Black on March 4, 1837 . Until March 3, 1839 he was able to complete a legislative period in Congress . In 1840 he was re-elected to Congress in a by-election, where he ended the current legislative period between December 7, 1840 and March 3, 1841.

Between 1843 and 1845, McClure was Secretary of State, the executive officer of the government of Pennsylvania. He advocated the expansion of the public school system in his state. He died on January 10, 1846 in Allegheny, which is now part of Pittsburgh .
