Samuel McKean (born April 7, 1787 in Huntingdon County , Pennsylvania , †  December 14, 1841 in West Burlington , Pennsylvania) was an American politician who represented the state of Pennsylvania in both chambers of Congress .

Samuel McKean first attended public schools and then worked in the commercial sector. In the state militia he held the rank of major general . In 1814 he was a member of the executive ( Board of commissioners ) of Bradford County .

From 1815 to 1819 McKean was an MP in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives . In 1822 he was elected to the US House of Representatives for the first time as a member of the Jackson wing of the Democratic Republican Party , where he represented the 9th Congressional District of Pennsylvania from March 4, 1823 to March 3, 1829  . Between 1829 and 1830 there was a session in the Pennsylvania Senate ; there he resigned his mandate to become Secretary of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In 1832 he was a member of the Electoral College for the Democratic Party , which Andrew Jackson confirmed as US President after his election victory over Henry Clay . Finally, in the same year, the election to the US Senate took place . McKean stayed there from March 4, 1833 to March 3, 1839 and acted among other things as committee chairman of the Committee to Audit and Control the Contingent Expenses .

Samuel McKean died in December 1841. His nephew James B. McKean was also a member of the US House of Representatives from 1859 to 1863 as the Republican representative of New York .
