Robert Patrick "Bob" Casey Jr. (born April 13, 1960 in Scranton , Pennsylvania ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . Since 2007 he has represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US Senate .

Life

Bob Casey was born to a Catholic family from Ireland as one of eight children . He is the son of Robert P. Casey , the 42nd Governor of Pennsylvania.

In 1982 he graduated from the College of the Holy Cross and received a doctorate in law from the Catholic University of America . Between college and university, he served as a member of the Jesuit Volunteer Corps (American equivalent of the Jesuit Volunteers ) and taught for a year at the Gesu School in Philadelphia . Casey and his wife Terese married in 1985 and have four daughters, Elyse, Caroline, Julia and Marena.

From 1991 to 1996 he worked as a lawyer in Scranton. In 1996 he was elected Auditor General in Pennsylvania . In 2002 he was defeated by Ed Rendell in the Democratic primary for governor in Pennsylvania.

In 2004 he was electoral candidate for John F. Kerry at Electoral College .

Casey was the State Treasurer of Pennsylvania and was elected United States Senator on November 7, 2006. He defeated the previous mandate holder Rick Santorum from the Republican Party and replaced him on January 3, 2007. In the 2012 election he was re-elected against Tom Smith with 54 to 45 percent of the vote , and in the 2018 election against the previous Congressman Lou Barletta with 56 to 43 percent. From 2011 to 2013, Casey chaired the Joint Economic Committee of Congress .
