Andrew Gregg
Andrew Gregg (born June 10, 1755 in Carlisle , Province of Pennsylvania , † May 20, 1835 in Bellefonte , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician ( Democratic Republican Party ).
Life
The merchant and farmer Gregg was a member of the United States Congress from 1791 to 1813, first in the House of Representatives from October 24, 1791 to March 3, 1807 , and then as a Senator from October 26, 1807 to March 3, 1813 . In the Senate, Gregg served as pro tempore president during the 11th Congress . In 1816 he was appointed Secretary of the Commonwealth for Pennsylvania. In 1823 Gregg ran unsuccessfully for governor of Pennsylvania. Before his election to Congress Gregg had as a member of the militia of Delaware in the American Revolution participated. From 1779 to 1783 he was a lecturer at the College of Philadelphia .
Two townships in Pennsylvania were named after Gregg. One was founded in 1826 and is in Center County , the other, founded in 1865, in Union County (formerly part of Lycoming County ).

Andrew Gregg was married to a daughter of Brigadier General James Potter . Gregg's father, also known as Andrew, was a member of the Paxton Boys in the 1763 massacre of the Susquehannock Indians near Lancaster . Gregg's grandson Andrew Gregg Curtin and James Xavier McLanahan were also well-known Pennsylvania politicians.
