Joseph Anderson
Joseph Inslee Anderson (born November 5, 1757 in Philadelphia , Province of Pennsylvania , † April 17, 1837 in Washington DC ) was an American politician of the Democratic Republican Party .
Life
Originally from Pennsylvania , Anderson served as an officer in the Revolutionary War on the Continental Army side . For most of the war he held the office of paymaster in his regiment.
After the war, he embarked on a legal career and was inducted into the Delaware Bar . In 1791 he was appointed federal judge for the Southwest Territory , which later became the state of Tennessee , among other things . He became a member of the first Tennessee Constitutional Convention five years later.

Anderson became politically active in 1797 when the Tennessee State Legislature elected him US Senator . His predecessor, William Blount , had been expelled from Congress . His original term ended on March 3, 1799; However, he remained after another election by the Tennessee State Assembly in the Senate and took there now as the successor of Daniel Smith the second seat of the state. After two further re-elections, he left the Congress on March 3, 1815 at his own request. During this time he had been President pro tempore of the Senate between 1803 and 1804 .
His political career did not end there. Joseph Anderson stayed in Washington and was appointed Comptroller of the Treasury , a senior position in the US Treasury Department which he held until 1836. The following year he died in Washington.
He was buried in the Congressional Cemetery . Anderson County in Tennessee was named after him in his honor . His son Alexander O. Anderson later also became a Senator for Tennessee.
