Thomas B. Turley

Thomas Battle Turley (born April 5, 1845 in Memphis , Tennessee , † July 1, 1910 ibid) was an American politician of the Democratic Party . From 1897 to 1901 he sat for the US state Tennessee in the US Senate .

biography

Turley was born in Memphis. There he grew up and attended school. During the American Civil War he served in the Confederate States Army . He was temporarily taken prisoner of war . After Tennessee was rejoined, Turley began studying law at the University of Virginia . In 1867 he graduated. He was inducted into the Tennessee Bar Association in the 1870s and practiced in Memphis from then on.

After the death of Isham G. Harris , Turley, who was highly regarded as a lawyer throughout the state, was named Harris's successor in the Senate by Governor Robert Love Taylor . He was later elected to the remainder of Harris by the Tennessee General Assembly . In 1901 he retired from the Senate after declaring early that he would only serve Harris's original term.

He returned to Memphis and served as a lawyer until his death. Turley was buried in Elmwood Cemetery in his native town.
