Life

Regenbrecht was initially supposed to become a businessman , but then decided to study law at the University of Breslau , which he interrupted in 1813 to take part in the wars of liberation for Prussia . In these he earned the Iron Cross 2nd class as an officer . After his military service, he resumed his legal studies and studied at the universities in Breslau, Göttingen and Berlin . During his studies in 1817 he was one of the founders of the Teutonia Breslau fraternity . In Berlin he received his doctorate in law in 1820 . Together with Ernst Theodor Gaupp , he completed his habilitation at the University of Breslau in the same year.

In 1821 Regenbrecht was appointed associate professor and then in 1826 full professor at the University of Breslau. He held this position until his death. In the years 1843 and 1844 he was also rector of the university.

Influenced by the movement around Johannes Ronge , Regenbrecht resigned from the Roman Catholic Church in 1845 . He justified this step in the declaration to the diocese administrator and auxiliary bishop Dr. Latussek on leaving the Roman Catholic Church . At the end of 1846 he resigned from the German Catholic community , as he saw no future for it under the leadership of Christian Gottfried Daniel Nees von Esenbeck .

The Catholic theologian and philosopher Johann Josef Regenbrecht was his brother.
