Joseph Bradley Varnum (born January 29, 1751 in Dracut , Province of Massachusetts Bay , † September 21, 1821 ibid) was an American politician of the Democratic Republican Party from the state of Massachusetts .

Life

Joseph Varnum was born in Dracut, Massachusetts. His brother was James Mitchell Varnum . He was a farmer who, despite his poor training, had learned enough to work as a judge in the local court. After serving in the American Revolutionary War , he served in the Massachusetts legislature for 15 years, beginning with the House of Representatives from 1780 to 1785 and ending with the Massachusetts State Senate from 1786 to 1795.

In 1795 Varnum was elected to the US House of Representatives, where he served from March 4, 1795 until his resignation on June 29, 1811. For the last four years of his tenure, he served as Speaker of the House of Representatives . In 1811 Varnum was elected to the US Senate for a term. In 1817 he returned to Massachusetts and was re-elected to the Massachusetts Senate, where he remained until his death. He died in his hometown and was buried in Varnum Cemetery , which was named after him.
