John Winston Jones
John Winston Jones (born November 22, 1791 in Amelia Court House , Amelia County , Virginia , † January 29, 1848 in Chesterfield County , Virginia) was an American politician and from 1843 to 1845 the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the United States .

John Winston Jones was born in Amelia Court House on November 22, 1791. He attended private school and graduated from the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg with a law degree in 1813 . He was admitted to the bar that same year and began working in Chesterfield County as a prosecutor for the Fifth Judicial District of Virginia. He was a member of Congress from March 4, 1835 to March 3, 1845 - the first two years as a Jacksonian , later as a Democrat . Among other things, he was the chairman of the Committee on Ways and Means (1839-1841) and from 1843 to 1845 spokesman for the House of Representatives . He waived re-election to Congress and left it in 1845 to return to work as a lawyer. In addition, he was also active in agriculture.
In 1846 he became a member of the Virginia House of Representatives and served as speaker . However, he rejected his re-election the following year for reasons related to illness. On January 29, 1848, he died on his country estate "Dellwood" in Chesterfield County. He is buried in the family cemetery on his property, northwest of Petersburg .
