Jennifer Lynn Wexton (* 27 May 1968 as Jennifer Lynn Tosini in Washington, DC , United States ) is an American politician . As a member of the Democratic Party , she has held the tenth seat of the state of Virginia in the United States House of Representatives since January 3, 2019 . She was elected to this office in November 2018; she was sworn in on January 3, 2019.

Life

Jennifer Wexton studied law at the University of Maryland, College Park and the College of William and Mary . She then worked as a lawyer and as a prosecutor and judge in Loudoun County until 2011 .

Wexton is married with two children; she lives in Leesburg , Virginia .

Political career

In 2014, Wexton was elected to the Virginia Senate, which she served until 2018. Most recently she held the office of minority whip there.

In the 2018 election to the United States House of Representatives , Wexton was elected to the tenth seat of the state of Virginia with 56 percent of the vote; she asserted herself against the Republican incumbent Barbara Comstock . The mandate was previously held by a Republican for nearly four decades.
