Alexander Davis (politician)
Alexander Mathews Davis (born January 17, 1833 in Wythe County , Virginia , † September 25, 1889 in Independence , Virginia) was an American politician . In 1873 and 1874 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Alexander Davis occasionally attended the public schools in his home country and in the meantime also enjoyed private schooling. He then graduated from Emory and Henry College in Emory . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1854, he began to work in Wytheville in this profession. He later moved his residence and legal practice to Independence. During the civil war he served as an officer in the Confederation Army , where he made it to lieutenant colonel. He was captured shortly before the end of the war. After the war he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1869 and 1871 he was a member of the Virginia Senate .
In the congressional election of 1872 Davis was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded Richard Thomas Walker Duke on March 4, 1873 . The election result of 1872 was challenged by his opponent Christopher Yancy Thomas . When this objection was granted, Davis had to cede his mandate on March 5, 1874 to Thomas. After his time in the US House of Representatives, Alexander Davis practiced as a lawyer again. He died in Independence on September 25, 1889.
