Benjamin Lee "Ben" Cline (born February 29, 1972 in Stillwater , Oklahoma , United States ) is an American politician . As a member of the Republican Party , he has held the sixth seat of the state of Virginia in the United States House of Representatives since January 3, 2019 . He was elected to this office on November 6, 2018 and was sworn in on January 3, 2019. He previously served in the Virginia House of Representatives from 2002 to 2018 .

Life

Cline was born on February 29, 1972 in Stillwater , Oklahoma , and grew up in Rockbridge County , Virginia. He graduated from Rockbridge County High School in 1990 . He completed his bachelor's degree at Bates College , a private university, and received his bachelor's degree in 1994. In 2007 he received through his studies at the University of Richmond School of Law the Juris Doctor . He served in the United States House of Representatives as Chief of Staff for Virginia MP Bob Goodlatte . From 2002 to 2007 he was President of NDS Corporation , a sales and marketing support company based in Virginia. Until 2013 he served as assistant to the district attorney for Rockingham County and Harrisonburg . He currently has a law practice in Lexington . Cline is the son of Philip L. and Julie Cline and husband. He has two children with his wife, Elizabeth Rocovich.

Political career

Cline joined the Virginia House of Representatives in 2002 after Vance Wilkins resigned on allegations of sexual harassment . In 2002 he won the election with 57.43 percent of the vote against Mimi Elrod, in 2003 with 69.17 percent against EW Sheffield and in 2005 with 62.44 percent against David Cox. In 2007 there was no challenger.

In 2009 Cline faced Jeff Price and won with 70.86 percent of the vote; In 2011 and 2013, as in 2007, there were no challengers. In 2015 Cline won against Ellen Arthur with 70.8 percent and in 2017 against John Winfrey with 72 percent.

In November 2017, Cline announced that he would run for the sixth Virginia state seat in the United States House of Representatives in 2018 to take over retired incumbent Bob Goodlatte .
