Robert Taylor Thorp (born March 12, 1850 in Oxford , Granville County , North Carolina , †  November 26, 1938 in Virginia Beach , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1896 and 1899 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives twice .

Career

Robert Thorp attended the Horner Academy in his native Oxford. After a subsequent law degree at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and his admission as a lawyer in 1870, he began to work in Boydton in this profession. From 1877 to 1895 he was a district attorney in Mecklenburg County there . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party .

In the congressional election of 1894 he lost to William Robertson McKenney . After a successful opposition to the election result, Thorp was able to take over the mandate for the fourth constituency of Virginia from McKenney on May 2, 1896 . By March 3, 1897, he ended the current legislative period in Congress . In the elections of 1896 the scenario of the previous election was repeated. Robert Thorp was defeated by the Democrat Sydney Parham Epes and again successfully appealed against the outcome of the election. Between March 23, 1898 and March 3, 1899, he again ended an ongoing legislative period in Congress. During this time the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell .

In 1898, Robert Thorp was not re-elected. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he practiced as a lawyer again. He died in Virginia Beach on November 26, 1938.
