George Dromgoole

George Coke Dromgoole (born May 15, 1797 in Lawrenceville , Brunswick County , Virginia , †  April 27, 1847 in Brunswick County, Virginia) was an American politician . Between 1835 and 1847 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives twice .

Career

George Dromgoole attended public schools in his home country. After that he became a successful planter . After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in this profession. At the same time he struck a political career in the 1820s as a supporter of the future US President Andrew Jackson . He later became a member of the Democratic Party founded by him in 1828 . Between 1823 and 1826 Dromgoole was a member of the Virginia House of Representatives . He then sat in the State Senate from 1826 to 1835 . In 1829 he was a delegate to a meeting to revise the Virginia Constitution. He was also a general in the state militia.

In the congressional election of 1834 Dromgoole was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the second constituency of his state , where he succeeded George B. Cary on March 4, 1835 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1841 . In November 1837, he killed a hotel owner in Lawrenceville in a duel . In the following years this process was discussed again and again by the press and local politicians. Dromgoole looked for a way out of guilt in alcohol and became an alcoholic. The whole situation led to his renouncement of another candidacy for Congress in 1840.

In the elections of 1842 Dromgoole was then re-elected to Congress in the fifth district of his state as the successor to Robert Craig , where he could remain after two re-elections until his death on April 27, 1847. His last years in the US House of Representatives were marked by the events of the Mexican-American War .
