Joel Broyhill (born November 4, 1919 in Hopewell , Virginia , † September 24, 2006 in Arlington , Virginia) was an American politician ( Republican Party ).

Career

Joel Thomas Broyhill attended public schools and the Fork Union Military Academy . Then he went to George Washington University between 1939 and 1941 . Broyhill joined the US Army in February 1942 , where he held the rank of captain in the 106th Infantry Division . He was transferred to Europe , where he was captured during the Battle of the Bulge . After six months in a German prison camp , he was able to escape and join the advancing American troops. After four years of service, he was released from active service on November 1, 1945. He returned to the United States the same year , where he started working for his father's construction company, MT Broyhill & Sons . He subsequently served as President of the Arlington County Chamber of Commerce and presided over the Arlington County Planning Commission .

Broyhill was elected to the 83rd US Congress and re - elected to the ten subsequent US Congresses . He served in the US House of Representatives from January 3, 1953 until his resignation on December 31, 1974. He suffered a defeat when he tried to be reelected to the 94th Congress in 1974 . During his time in the US House of Representatives, Broyhill was one of the signatories of the Southern Manifesto , a letter of protest against the desegregation.
