Edward Colston (politician, 1786)

Edward Colston (born December 25, 1786 in Winchester , Virginia , †  April 23, 1852 in Berkeley County , Virginia) was an American politician . Between 1817 and 1819 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Edward Colston initially enjoyed a private school education. He then studied at Princeton College until 1806 . After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Federalist Party . Between 1812 and 1835 he sat several times in the Virginia House of Representatives . He also took part in the British-American War of 1812 .

In the congressional election of 1816 Colston was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the second constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded Magnus Tate on March 4, 1817 . Until March 3, 1819, he was able to complete a legislative period in Congress . After his time in the US House of Representatives, Colston continued his political career at the local level. From 1833 to 1835 he was again a member of the state parliament; in 1844 and 1845 he served as high sheriff in Berkeley County in what is now West Virginia . He died on April 23, 1852 on his Honeywood estate , where he was also buried.
