William E. Gaines

William Embre Gaines (born August 30, 1844 in Charlotte Court House , Charlotte County , Virginia , †  May 4, 1912 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1887 and 1889 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Gaines attended public schools in his home country. During the Civil War he served in the Confederation Army . After studying law and becoming a lawyer, he began to work in this profession. He was also active in the tobacco business and banking in Burkeville . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1883 and 1887 he was a member of the Virginia Senate . In June 1884 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Chicago , where James G. Blaine was nominated as a presidential candidate. In the meantime, Gaines became mayor of Burkeville.

In the congressional election of 1886 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the fourth constituency of Virginia, where he succeeded James Dennis Brady on March 4, 1887 . Since he refused to run again in 1888, he was only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1889 . After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, William Gaines no longer appeared politically. He died on May 4, 1912 in the federal capital Washington.
