Joseph Jorgensen (born February 11, 1844 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , †  January 21, 1888 in Portland , Oregon ) was an American politician . Between 1877 and 1883 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joseph Jorgensen studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania . He then worked for a few years in the US Army medical service . He then embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . He later moved to St. Petersburg , Virginia. Between 1871 and 1873 he was a member of the Virginia House of Representatives ; from 1874 to 1877 he was a postman in his new hometown.

In the congressional election of 1876 Jorgensen was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded William Henry Harrison Stowell on March 4, 1877 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1883 . From 1881 he was chairman of the Committee on Mileage . In June 1880 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Chicago , where James A. Garfield was nominated as a presidential candidate.

Between 1883 and 1888 Joseph Jorgensen was the head of the cadastral department in Walla Walla , Washington state . He died in Portland on January 21, 1888.
