Hugh Caperton

Hugh Caperton (born April 17, 1781 in Greenbrier County , Virginia , †  February 9, 1847 in Monroe County , Virginia) was an American politician . Between 1813 and 1815 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Hugh Caperton was born in what is now West Virginia . Nothing is known about his youth and school education. He worked as a planter as well as in trade. In 1805 he was a sheriff in Monroe County. Politically, he joined the Federalist Party . Between 1810 and 1813 he was a member of the Virginia House of Representatives . In the congressional elections of 1812 Caperton was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded Joseph Lewis on March 4, 1813 . Until March 3, 1815, he was able to complete a legislative period in Congress . This was shaped by the events of the British-American War .

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Hugh Caperton returned to farming and trading. Between 1826 and 1830 he was again a member of the State Parliament of Virginia. He died on February 9, 1847 on his Elmwood estate in Monroe County. His son Allen (1810–1876) became a US Senator for West Virginia.
