Thomas H. Bayly

Thomas Henry Bayly (born December 11, 1810 in Drummondtown , Accomack County , Virginia , †  June 23, 1856 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1844 and 1856 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Thomas Bayly was a son of Congressman Thomas M. Bayly (1775-1834). He was born on the Mount Custis family estate near Drummondtown and later attended the public schools in his homeland. He then studied until 1829 at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1830, he began to work in Accomack County in this profession. He was also active in agriculture. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1836 and 1842 he was a member of the Virginia House of Representatives . From 1837 to 1842 he was Brigadier General of the State Militia. He then served as a judge on the Superior Court of Law and Chancery from 1842 to 1844 .

After the resignation of MP Henry A. Wise , Bayly was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he took up his new mandate on May 6, 1844 when the by-election was due for the seventh seat of Virginia . After six re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on June 23, 1856 . Since 1853 he represented there as the successor to John Millson the first constituency of his state. From 1849 to 1851 Bayly was chairman of the Committee on Ways and Means ; from 1851 to 1855 he headed the Foreign Affairs Committee . The Mexican-American War fell during his time as a member of parliament . Subsequently, the work of the Congress was increasingly shaped by the events leading up to the civil war . The issue of slavery was at the center of the dispute.

Thomas Bayly was buried in the family cemetery on the Mount Custis estate . His mandate fell to Muscoe Garnett after a special election .
