Stanford Parris

Stanford Elmer Parris (born September 9, 1929 in Champaign , Illinois , †  March 27, 2010 in Mathews County , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1973 and 1991 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives twice .

Career

Stanford Parris attended public schools in his home in Illinois. He then studied until 1950 at the University of Illinois in Champaign. During the Korean War , he served in the Air Force between 1950 and 1954 . For his military achievements he received the Distinguished Flying Cross , the Air Medal and the Purple Heart . After studying law at George Washington University in Washington, DC and being admitted to the bar in 1958, he began working in this profession in Alexandria . He later became president of a Chrysler subsidiary in Woodbridge (1965) and the Flying Circus Aerodrome , an air show (1971). In the meantime, Parris also worked as a pilot. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . From 1964 to 1967 he was a member of the Fairfax County County Council; from 1969 to 1972 he sat in the Virginia House of Representatives .

In the 1972 congressional election , Parris was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the eighth constituency of Virginia, where he succeeded William L. Scott on January 3, 1973 . He was not re-elected in 1974 as a result of the Watergate Affair , which harmed many Republican candidates. From 1975 to 1977 Parris served on the District of Columbia Legislative Revision Commission . In the 1980 elections , Stanford Parris was re-elected to Congress in the eighth district of his state, where he replaced Herbert Harris on January 3, 1981 , who had succeeded him in 1975. After four re-elections, he could remain in parliament until January 3, 1991. Among other things, he was a member of the Science and Technology Committee . In 1990 he was not re-elected.

Between 1991 and 1995, Parris was President of the Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation . He died of heart failure on March 27, 2010 on his Mathews County estate.
