Archibald Stuart

Archibald Stuart (born December 2, 1795 in Lynchburg , Virginia , †  September 20, 1855 in Patrick County , Virginia) was an American politician . Between 1837 and 1839 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Archibald Stuart attended private schools in his homeland. During the British-American War of 1812 he was an officer in the US Army . After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in this profession in Lynchburg. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Stuart served in the Virginia House of Representatives in 1830 and 1831 . Between 1829 and 1851 he was a delegate to several meetings to revise the Virginia Constitution.

In the 1836 congressional elections , Stuart was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 19th  constituency of his state , where he succeeded John Robertson on March 4, 1837 . Since he was not confirmed in 1838, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1839 . After his time in the US House of Representatives, Stuart returned to practice as a lawyer. From 1852 to 1854 he was a member of the Virginia Senate . He died on September 20, 1855 on his Laurel Hill estate in Patrick County.
