Abraham B. Venable
Abraham Bedford Venable (born November 20, 1758 in Prince Edward County , Colony of Virginia , † December 26, 1811 in Richmond , Virginia ) was an American politician who represented the state of Virginia in both chambers of Congress .
Abraham Venable was born on State Hill farm in what is now the town of Worsham . He first attended Hampden-Sydney College and graduated in 1780 from the College of New Jersey , later Princeton University . He subsequently worked as a planter and studied law , after which he was admitted to the bar in 1774 and began practicing law in Prince Edward County.
On March 4, 1791 Abraham Venable moved as a member of the sixth congressional electoral district of Virginia to the United States House of Representatives , where he belonged to the anti-government anti-administration faction and remained until March 3, 1799. On December 7, 1803 he returned to Congress for the Democratic Republican Party : in the Senate , he took the place of the late Stevens Thomson Mason ; the acting successor appointed John Taylor did not run for election. Venable resigned his mandate on June 7, 1804 to become President of the Bank of Virginia .
Abraham Venable was killed in a fire in a Richmond theater on December 26, 1811. Virginia's Governor George William Smith was also among the victims . His nephew Abraham Watkins Venable later also became a politician and sat for North Carolina in the US House of Representatives and in the Confederate Congress.
