Lewis Steenrod

Lewis Steenrod (born May 27, 1810 in Wheeling , Virginia , †  October 3, 1862 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1839 and 1845 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Lewis Steenrod, born in what is now West Virginia , attended public schools in his homeland. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1835, he began to work in this profession in Wheeling. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional election of 1838 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 19th  constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded Archibald Stuart on March 4, 1839 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1845 . From 1841 to 1843 he represented the 21st and since 1843 the 15th district of his state. Tensions between President John Tyler and the Whigs had overshadowed the period since 1841 . In addition, a possible annexation of the Republic of Texas , which has been independent of Mexico since 1836, was already being discussed.

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Lewis Steenrod practiced again as a lawyer. He was a member of the Virginia Senate from 1853 to 1856 . He died near Wheeling on October 3, 1862.
