Abigail Davis Spanberger (* 7. August 1979 in Red Bank , New Jersey as Abigail Davis ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party and Member of the US House of Representatives for the seventh constituency in the state of Virginia .

Life

Born Abigail Davis in Red Bank , New Jersey , she grew up near Richmond, Virginia, when she was 13 years old. She did her Bachelor of Arts at the University of Virginia , and later her Master of Business Administration at Purdue University . Because of her interest in languages, Spanberger learned French , Spanish , German and Italian during her school days . After completing her training in the early 2000s, she first worked for the United States Postal Inspection Service , where she primarily specialized in prosecuting money laundering and drug trafficking . In 2006 she moved to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) , where she worked in the field of counter-terrorism . In 2014, she left the public service and returned to the private sector. There she initially worked as a consultant for various universities in Virginia. She later also served on an advisory body to the governor of Virginia that dealt with housing construction. In 2017 she campaigned for the Democrats in the governor and state legislature of Virginia.

In the 2018 congressional elections , Spanberger himself ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives . She defeated Republican MP Dave Brat on November 6, 2018 with 50.3% to 48.4% of the vote. Brat was considered a central figure in the tea party movement and became known nationwide when he was first elected in 2014 when he surprisingly beat the Republican faction leader in the primary Eric Cantor . The race between Spanberger and Brat was considered one of the most competitive in the entire USA and received national attention. Brat's defeat, which was largely due to the loss of votes in the suburbs, was widely regarded as an indication of the dwindling support of the Republicans in these areas. In their election campaign, Spanberger focused primarily on the issue of health care (preserving and improving Obamacare ) and accused her competitor of being too ideologically to the right. Spanberger took office as MP for the seventh constituency of Virginia at the constituent session of the new Congress on January 3, 2019.

Abigail Spanberger is married and has three children with her husband Adam Spanberger.
