Ballard Smith

Ballard Smith (* before 1790 in Hanover County , Virginia , † after 1837) was an American politician . Between 1815 and 1821 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

There is no record of Smith's birth or death. Nothing is known about his school education either. He served as an officer in the Continental Army during the War of Independence ; then he was an officer in the US Army , in which he rose to major in the 1790s. Politically, he later became a member of the Democratic Republican Party . He served in the Virginia House of Representatives from 1810 to 1813 .

In the 1814 congressional elections , Smith was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the seventh constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded Hugh Caperton on March 4, 1815 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1821 . Between 1824 and 1826, and again in 1836 and 1837, Smith was again a member of the Virginia State Parliament. After that his track is lost.
