William Taylor (politician, 1788)

William Taylor (born April 5, 1788 in Alexandria , Virginia , †  January 17, 1846 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1843 and 1846 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Taylor attended public schools in his home country. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer, he began to work in Staunton in this profession. In 1813 he moved his residence and law firm to Lexington . Between 1817 and 1843 he was a district attorney in Rockbridge County and Pocahontas County , now part of West Virginia . In 1821 he entered the Virginia House of Representatives . He later became a member of the Democratic Party founded by Andrew Jackson in 1828 .

In the congressional election of 1842 Taylor was elected in the eleventh constituency of Virginia to the US House of Representatives in Washington, where he succeeded John Botts on March 4, 1843 . After a re-election he could remain in Congress until his death on January 17, 1846 . During this time he was chairman of the Committee on Accounts . Since 1845, the work of Congress has also been shaped by the events of the Mexican-American War .
