G. William Whitehurst
George William Whitehurst (born March 12, 1925 in Norfolk , Virginia ) is a former American politician . Between 1969 and 1987 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .
Career
William Whitehurst attended Maury High School in Norfolk until 1942 . During World War II , he served in the US Navy in the Pacific from 1943 to 1946 . After the war he continued his education. Until 1950 he studied at Washington and Lee University in Lexington . This was followed by a study at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville until 1951 . He finished his studies with a philosophy degree at West Virginia University in Morgantown . From 1950 to 1968 he was a faculty member at Old Dominion College in Norfolk. Politically, he joined the Republican Party .
In the 1968 congressional elections , Whitehurst was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded Porter Hardy on January 3, 1969 . After eight re-elections, he was able to complete nine legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1987 . During this time, among other things, the end of the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement, as well as the Watergate affair in 1974 . Whitehurst was at times a member of the Armed Forces Committee , the Intelligence Committee and the Ethics Committee . In 1986 he renounced another candidacy.
Since the end of his tenure in the US House of Representatives, William Whitehurst was again a faculty member at Old Dominion College, Norfolk. At times he also worked as a television journalist for the broadcaster WTAR-TV .
