Francis E. Rives

Francis Everod Rives (born January 14, 1792 in Prince George County , Virginia , †  December 26, 1861 in Petersburg , Virginia) was an American politician . Between 1837 and 1841 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Francis Rives attended public schools in his home country. Then he worked as a planter . He also worked in railroad construction and administration in Virginia and North Carolina . At the same time he embarked on a political career. Between 1821 and 1831 he was a member of the Virginia House of Representatives ; from 1831 to 1836 he was a member of the State Senate . He became a member of the Democratic Party founded in 1828 .

In the 1836 congressional election , Rives was elected to the 17th  constituency of Virginia in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded John M. Patton on March 4, 1837 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1841 . From 1839 he was chairman of the election committee. In 1840, Rives renounced another congressional candidacy.

Between May 1847 and May 1848 he was mayor of Petersburg. Francis Rives also died in this city on December 26, 1861.
