John Claiborne

John Claiborne (* 1777 in Brunswick County , Virginia ; †  October 9, 1808 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1805 and 1808 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Claiborne came from a well-known family of politicians. He was the son of Congressman Thomas Claiborne (1749-1812) and older brother of the same name Thomas Claiborne (1780-1856), who sat for Tennessee in the US House of Representatives. He was also related to several other politicians. Claiborne enjoyed a good education. After studying medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and his approval as a doctor in 1798, he began to work in this profession. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Republican Party founded by President Thomas Jefferson .

In the 1804 congressional election , Claiborne was elected to the 17th  electoral district of Virginia in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded his father on March 4, 1805. After being re-elected, he could remain in Congress until his death on October 9, 1808 . He was buried in the family cemetery near Dinwiddie . His mandate fell to Thomas Gholson after a special election .
