Archibald Atkinson

Archibald Atkinson (born September 15, 1792 in Isle of Wight County , Virginia , †  January 7, 1872 in Smithfield , Virginia) was an American politician . Between 1843 and 1849 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Archibald Atkinson received a good education. After a subsequent law degree at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg and his admission as a lawyer, he began to work in Smithfield in this profession. He also took part in the British-American War of 1812 as a soldier . At the same time he embarked on a political career. Between 1815 and 1817 and again from 1828 to 1831 he sat in the Virginia House of Representatives . From 1839 to 1843 he was a member of the State Senate . Politically, he joined the Democratic Party .

In the congressional elections of 1842 Atkinson was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded Francis Mallory on March 4, 1843 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1849 . These had been shaped by the events of the Mexican-American War since 1845 . In 1848 Atkinson renounced another candidacy. After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, he served as a prosecutor in the Isle of Wight County. He died in Smithfield on January 7, 1872.
