Jacob Swoope

Jacob Swoope (* around 1770 in Philadelphia , Province of Pennsylvania , †  1832 in Staunton , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1809 and 1811 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jacob Swoope attended public schools in his home country. In 1789 he moved to Staunton, Virginia, where he worked in commerce. As a result, he held several local offices in his new home. In 1801 he was elected mayor of Staunton and three years later confirmed in this office. He was a member of the Federalist Party .

In the 1808 congressional elections , Swoope was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded David Holmes on March 4, 1809 . Since he refused to run again in 1810, he was only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1811 . After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Jacob Swoope no longer appeared politically. He died in Staunton in 1832.
