John Pegram (politician)

John Pegram (born November 16, 1773 in Dinwiddie County , Colony of Virginia , †  April 8, 1831 ibid) was an American politician . In 1818 and 1819 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Pegram was born on the Bonneville Estate in Dinwiddie County. He attended the public schools in his home country and then held several local offices. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Republican Party . Between 1797 and 1801 and again from 1813 to 1815 he sat in the Virginia House of Representatives . He was also a member of the State Senate from 1804 to 1808 . During the British-American War of 1812 , Pegram served as major general in the Virginia State Militia.

After the death of MP Peterson Goodwyn , Pegram was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he took up his new mandate on April 21, 1818 when the by-election was due for the 19th seat of Virginia . By March 3, 1819, he was able to end the current legislative period there. In April 1821, Pegram was named US Marshal for Eastern Virginia.

The circumstances of his death are unclear. According to his biography at Congress, he died on April 8, 1831 in a ship fire on the Ohio River ; his body was never found. According to other sources, the fatality on the Ohio was his son James. Accordingly, John Pegram died on April 8, 1831 on his estate in Dinwiddie County and was buried on the family plantation there.
