James Jones

James Jones (born December 11, 1772 in Nottoway County , Colony Virginia , † April 25, 1848 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1819 and 1823 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Jones attended Hampden-Sydney College until 1791 and then Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia . After a subsequent medical degree at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and his approval as a doctor, he began to work in this profession in his home country from 1796. There he also worked in agriculture. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Republican Party . From 1804 to 1809 Jones served in the Virginia House of Representatives . After that he was a member of the Privy Council until 1812 . During the British-American War of 1812 he was responsible for military hospitals and medical care. In 1818 he was again a member of the state parliament.

In the congressional elections of 1818 Jones was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 19th  constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded John Pegram on March 4, 1819 . After a re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1823 . From 1827 to 1829 Jones was once again a member of the Virginia House of Representatives. Otherwise he worked in agriculture. He died on April 25, 1848 on his Mountain Hall estate in Nottoway County, where he was also buried.
