Arthur Smith (politician)

Arthur Smith (born November 15, 1785 in Smithfield , Isle of Wight County , Virginia , †  March 30, 1853 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1821 and 1825 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Arthur Smith was born on the family estate of Windsor Castle near Smithfield. He attended the public schools in his home country and studied at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg . After a subsequent law degree and his 1808 admission to the bar, he began to work in Smithfield in this profession. He also managed his Windsor Castle estate . Smith was also an active member of the militia, serving as a colonel in the British-American War of 1812 . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Republican Party . Between 1818 and 1820 he was a member of the Virginia House of Representatives .

In the 1820 congressional election , Smith was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 20th constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded John C. Gray on March 4, 1821 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1825 . Since 1823 he represented the second district of his state as the successor to James Stephenson . At that time he was part of the faction around William Harris Crawford within his party . In 1824 he renounced another candidacy.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Arthur Smith practiced law again. Between 1836 and 1841 he was again a member of the state parliament of Virginia. He died in Smithfield on March 30, 1853 and was buried at Windsor Castle .
