Samuel Griffin (born 1746 in Richmond County , Colony of Virginia , †  November 3, 1810 ) was an American politician . Between 1789 and 1795 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Samuel Griffin grew up during the British colonial era and received a good education. After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in this profession. He joined the American Revolution in the 1770s and served as a colonel in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War . He was wounded in 1776. Griffin was also a member of the Virginia State Board of War . After the war he embarked on a political career. He was a member of the Virginia House of Representatives from 1786 to 1788 . From 1779 to 1780 he was mayor of the city of Williamsburg .

In the congressional elections of 1789 Griffin was elected in the ninth constituency of Virginia in the US House of Representatives, which was still in session in New York at the time , where he took up his new mandate on March 4, 1789. After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1795 . Since 1793 he represented the newly established 13th district of his state. During his tenure in Congress, the first ten amendments to the Constitution ratified the Bill of Rights .

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, the trail of Samuel Griffin is lost. The sources only mention his death on November 3, 1810.
