Norman Sisisky (born June 9, 1927 in Baltimore , Maryland , †  March 29, 2001 in Richmond , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1983 and 2001 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Norman Sisisky was born in Baltimore and raised in Richmond. In 1944 he graduated from the local John Marshall High School . He served in the US Navy in 1945 and 1946 . He then continued his education until 1949 with a study at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. In the following years he worked as a private businessman. He started a bottling company that was later acquired by Pepsi-Cola in Virginia. At the same time, Sisisky embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1974 and 1982 he was a member of the Virginia House of Representatives .

In the 1982 congressional election , Sisisky was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fourth constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded Robert Daniel on January 3, 1983 , whom he had defeated in the election. After nine re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on March 29, 2001 . He was temporarily a member of the Intelligence Committee and in that capacity worked closely with the CIA . Sisisky died as a result of cancer. After a special election, his mandate fell to Republican Randy Forbes .
