Sydney Parham Epes (born August 20, 1865 near Nottoway Court House , Nottoway County , Virginia , † March 3, 1900 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ). He was a cousin of James F. Epes and William Bacon Oliver , both Congressmen .

Career

Sydney Epes moved with his parents to Kentucky , where they settled near Franklin . There he attended public schools. He returned to Virginia in 1884, where he published a Democratic newspaper in Blackstone . Epes served in the Virginia House of Representatives in 1891 and 1892 . He then worked between 1895 and 1897 as a civil servant ( register ) in the Virginia Land Registry.

Epes was elected to the 55th US Congress , but his election was successfully challenged by Robert Taylor Thorp . He served in the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1897 to March 23, 1898. He was then re-elected to the 56th US Congress , where he served from March 4, 1899 until his death in Washington in March 1900. He was buried in Lake View Cemetery , Blackstone.
