Elbert Sevier Martin (born around 1829 in Jonesville , Lee County , Virginia , †  September 3, 1876 in Dallas , Texas ) was an American politician . Between 1859 and 1861 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Elbert Martin was the younger brother of Congressman John Preston Martin (1811-1862) from Kentucky . He attended public schools in his home country as well as Emory and Henry College , which he graduated from in 1848. In the following years Martin worked in Jonesville in the trade. In the congressional elections of 1858 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 13th  constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded George Washington Hopkins as an independent Democrat on March 4, 1859 . Since he was not confirmed in 1860, he was only able to serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1861 . This was shaped by the events leading up to the civil war .

Because of Virginia's exit from the Union, Martin's mandate was no longer filled in 1861. The 13th electoral district of his state died out. It was not re-established later either because the new state of West Virginia received its own congressional electoral districts at the expense of the old state. During the civil war, Martin was a captain in a volunteer unit that was part of the Confederation Army . In 1870 he moved to Dallas where he worked in the newspaper industry. He died there on September 3, 1876.
