Arkinglas House is a mansion in the Scottish village of Cairndow on the northwestern end of the Cowal Peninsula . It is a few hundred meters southwest of the town limits near the coast near the head of Loch Linnhe . In 1971 Ardkinglas House was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.

history

Ardkinglas Castle , a castle belonging to the Campbell clan , was once located on the grounds of Ardkinglas House . This building, probably built in 1396, was the residence of the Scottish Queen Maria I in July 1563 . In 1769 the castle was described as a ruin. Today there are no more signs of the fortress to be found. In 1773 James Campbell commissioned the architect Robert Adam to plan a country house on this site, which was ultimately not built. Alexander Campbell had a building erected on this site in 1795, probably largely based on plans by James Playfair , and the ruins of Ardkinglas Castle were also torn down in the process. This house was described as almost deserted in 1822 and was destroyed by fire in 1831. Accommodation was then set up in the outbuildings. When today's Ardkinglas House was built according to plans by Robert Lorimer between 1906 and 1908, parts of the former outbuilding were also demolished. The client was Andrew Noble, 1st Baronet . The last remains of the building from 1795 were finally removed in October 1996. Ardkinglas House is considered Lorimer's masterpiece.

Ardkinglas House has been the location of several films including The Crow Road , My Life so Far , The Rocket Post , My Friend, the Water Dragon and Max Manus . Several commercials were also shot there.
