Ardkinglas Castle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ardkinglas Castle is an abandoned castle on the banks of Loch Fyne in the Scottish county of Argyll (now Argyll and Bute ).

The castle (probably from the 14th century) was built in a rectangular shape around an inner courtyard measuring 29.3 meters by 29.3 meters. It had large tours on three of four corners; on the front facade it had a large gate tower with two flanking towers . It was surrounded by beautiful gardens and parkland, as well as the extensive Ardkinglas estate.

In 1769 it was reported that the castle had been destroyed.

In 1790 a large Georgian country house was built on the site of the castle in the classical Palladian style with 66 windows according to the plans of the architect Robert Adam and later those of James Playfair .
