George E. Bowden

George Edwin Bowden (born July 6, 1852 in Williamsburg , Virginia , †  January 22, 1908 in Norfolk , Virginia) was an American politician . Between 1887 and 1891 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Bowden, the nephew of US Senator Lemuel J. Bowden (1815–1864), first attended a private school and then studied law. But he did not practice as a lawyer. In the following years he worked in the banking industry. Between 1879 and 1885, Bowden was in charge of Customs in Norfolk Harbor. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party .

In the congressional elections of 1886 Bowden was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded Harry Libbey on March 4, 1887 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1891 . In 1890 it was not confirmed. After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Bowden was again in charge of customs in the Port of Norfolk. From 1899 he was employed in the administration of the federal district court for eastern Virginia. He died in Norfolk on January 22, 1908.
