John Taliaferro (* 1768 near Fredericksburg , Colony of Virginia ; †  August 12, 1852 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1801 and 1843 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives several times .

Career

John Taliaferro attended public schools in his home country. After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in this profession. He later embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Republican Party . In the 1800 congressional election , Taliaferro was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 19th  constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded Henry Lee on March 4, 1801 . Until March 3, 1803, he was initially only able to complete one legislative period in Congress . In the elections of 1810 he ran unsuccessfully against John Pratt Hungerford for Congress in the eighth district of his state . He appealed against the election result. When this was granted, he was able to take over the mandate from Hungerford on November 29, 1811 and end the current legislative period in Congress by March 3, 1813. During this time the British-American War began .

In the congressional elections of 1812 , Taliaferro was not confirmed. In the 1820s he became an opponent of the aspiring future US President Andrew Jackson . He later became a member of the Whig Party, founded in 1835 . After the death of MP William Lee Ball , he was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives at the by-election for the 13th seat of Virginia, where he took up his new mandate on March 24, 1824. After three re-elections, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1831. Since President Jackson took office in 1829, there has been heated debate inside and outside of Congress about its policies. It was about the controversial enforcement of the Indian Removal Act , the conflict with the state of South Carolina , which culminated in the nullification crisis , and the banking policy of the president.

Between 1835 and 1843, John Taliaferro represented the tenth constituency of his state. From 1839 he was chairman of the Committee on Revolutionary Pensions . The period from 1841 was overshadowed by tension between President John Tyler and the Whigs. In addition, a possible annexation of the Republic of Texas , which has been independent of Mexico since 1836, was already being discussed. From 1850 Taliaferro worked as a librarian for the US Treasury Department . He died on August 12, 1852.
